A SENTENCE BY BILL SHAKESPEARE

April 9, 2011

Are you crept hither to see the wrastling?

My own answer to this question posed in ‘As You Like It’ would be, “Yes, Bill, I are.”

THE SWIMMING POOL

April 6, 2011

The wheels of the universe turned toward the singular wink in time when the swimming pool in Sylvia Proll’s backyard would be a portal into the 16th dimension. Sylvia jackknifed and entered the water at the critical wink. She certainly was surprised to find herself supervising bingo in one corner of a trade union hall populated mostly by striped firemen and firewomen dancing a polka on clattering boards while singing the praises of the local food distribution co-op. And when a man of sorts offered to give her Thursday, she threw caution to the winds and accepted. Happily, Thursday turned out to be corned beef on rye, mustard and mayo only. The universe wheeled on.

THE MAN WHO SCALED SKYSCRAPERS

April 3, 2011

The man who scaled skyscrapers felt mighty low. He sighed and sank deeper into the embrace of the sofa. What was the use? Skyscrapers with scales were certainly scarce, it’s true. What was he supposed to do? Go to work in a fish market? As if. He scaled skyscrapers, not haddock. He stared at the blank television screen. The remote was right there, a mere sit-forward-and-reach away. He didn’t care. It was too much to contemplate lifting his arm. Sitting forward was out of the question. And so, remorse for the choices he’d made ruled the day. And, truth to tell, the night as well.

This story brought to you by gin, and plenty of it.
