Nittering with tongue to teeth, Duxbury approached the stallion. The stallion eyed Duxbury. Both Duxbury’s and the stallion’s nostrils valved in concert. The stallion hoofed and Duxbury booted at the earth. Duxbury and the stallion exchanged whinnies. The mesa was dry. Baring teeth, the stallion lunged. Baring teeth, Duxbury snarled. Duxbury’s snarl brought the stallion to an abrupt halt. The stallion eyed Duxbury. Duxbury eyed the stallion. The stage to Laramie passed by. Duxbury and the stallion stood unmoved.
As he hobbled along, he made many waste motions, like those of a partially destroyed insect.

Cloak
Med of the North opened wide the dark green velvet cloak behind her and thrust her pale green membraned wings, first left, then right, through the pair of carefully measured cuts in the fabric. She drew the cloak about her and snapped shut the clasp at her neck. She turned her gaze to the star.
Star
Through the night directly toward the bright bold light flew Med of the North, bobbing in slow rhythm on the whuff whuff whuff of her membraned wings. She drew nearer and nearer.
Ice
Over vast canyons of ice she flew searching. Aha! A red glow. Down she glided to land. The ice door glistened, opened. The red glow beckoned.
Morning
‘Meadow Jane Harper, it’s time to get up. Do you want to be late on the first day of school?’
Med opened her eyes. She smiled.
Lon had the beach at Malibu all to himself whenever he donned this disguise.
This was Lon Chaney’s favorite disguise because:
a. it was most effective when used in his sideline job as an insurance adjuster.
b. it made eating plywood, his favorite snack, a breeze.
c. when donning it to go shopping, he never had to pay for anything.
d. he liked going to beaches, but not crowded beaches. So…
