THE BOLDNESS OF CARRINGTON

July 29, 2018

Carrington’s heart rattled like a jackhammer. He felt faint, nevertheless he succeeded in passing into the breakroom unnoticed. Before his courage had time to fail, he stepped to the counter and opened the cupboard where the coffee mugs sat in an ordered row. He took his supervisor’s mug in trembling hand and moved it to a lower shelf. Swiftly he closed the cupboard door. Swiftly he exited the room. Casually, now daring to breathe, he returned to his workplace in silent triumph.

THE SMILER

July 25, 2018

The smiler prowls the parking garage at noon. His pasted on smile, a rictus of hope deferred, causes all who see it to shrink away and scuttle to a position affording them at least one vehicle stationed as a buffer between viewer and smiler. The smiler smiles and exits the garage to be bathed in sunlight. The smiler smiles. Oh, he smiles. He knows. He smiles.

BANAL INTERVIEWS WITH CELEBRITY GHOSTS – EDDIE RICKENBACKER

July 22, 2018

Loon: The Lords of the 4th Dimension decided to send a World War One flying ace to undergo this week’s 3 Question Interview. This flying ace’s name is Eddie Knickerbocker. Are you from New York, Mr. Knickerbocker?

Rickenbacker’s ghost: The name’s Rickenbacker, and I was Ohio born.

Loon: Oh, I was in Ohio once. I forget everything about it. Keeping that in mind, I’m informed you were a race car driver, too. Is that true?

Rickenbacker’s ghost: Yes.

Loon: Finally, puttees look like a nuisance. Were they?

Rickenbacker’s ghost: I didn’t wear them. I wore gaiters.

Loon: Good-bye.

(Rickenbacker enters one man sub ghost. Sub ghost dives down through floor. Loon seems to be frozen in some sort of trance.)
