The woman behind the counter nodded severely at me as I came in, glancing up through eyeglass frames that were black and round like little handcuffs.

BANAL INTERVIEWS WITH CELEBRITY GHOSTS – ARTURO TOSCANINI

August 7, 2016

Loon: I’m particularly thrilled to present today’s guest for the 3 Question Interview, one Arturo Toscanini, who was, I am informed by the Lords of the 4th Dimension, one of the greatest conductors of all time. Welcome, Mr. Toscanini. Tell me, did you ever get bored riding around on those trains all the time?

Toscanini’s ghost: Trains are good. I like trains. Trains.

Loon: Did you have a favorite train or passenger?

Toscanini’s ghost: Passenger? Train? No.

Loon: One final question. What is your favorite food?

Toscanini’s ghost: Pasta. Scusami, I go now. (Toscanini’s ghost conducts itself through the wall.)

Loon (beaming): There you have it. Join me again next week when another celebrity ghost will be here to undergo the 3 Question Interview.

NAME AND PEN NAME

August 6, 2016

Once upon a time there were 2 names. One of them was Moira O’Neill, and the other was Nesta Shakespeare Skrine. They belonged to the same woman, and she used one of them as a pen name. Yes, her pen name was Moira O’Neill. Her given name was Nesta Shakespeare Skrine. I pause to reflect.

escape was a dream of a hope.

was it barely possible? nope.

surrounded by trees unforgiving

he knew not for long he’d be living.

when a suddenly descending hawk

landed nearby on a rock

and presented a passionate plea.

the trees bowed away. he was free!

BANAL INTERVIEWS WITH CELEBRITY GHOSTS – SERGEI PROKOFIEV

July 31, 2016

Loon: I am excited to welcome for today’s 3 Question Interview Sergei Prokofiev, a famous Russian composer I think I heard about once. Mr, or should I say Herr Prokofiev, did you like being a Russian?

Prokofiev’s ghost: Da.

Loon: I am told you wrote music. Do you think music should be listened to in all kinds of weather?

Prokofiev’s ghost: Da.

Loon: When you sat down to write a really fat piece of music, did you take a lot of breaks for tea and bowling and such?

Prokofiev’s ghost: Da.

Loon: There you have it, ladies and gentlemen.

(Loon and Prokofiev’s ghost dance off to snippets of music from the ballet, Romeo and Juliet.)
