A SENTENCE BY SHIRLEY JACKSON

July 21, 2012

As the bus started up again they slipped back into the darkness and only the thin thread of light along the ceiling of the bus held them together, brought the back of the bus where she sat along with the front of the bus where the driver sat and the people sitting there so far away from her.

A very Shirley sentence indeed, dwelling as it does in her wonderful world of … ‘Wait a minute. What?’

When Eduardo Ciannelli as the evil cult guru in Gunga Din cries out, “KILL! KILL! KILL!”, his actorly motivation is directly linked to his being fed up with Sam Jaffe’s maddening fake rattlesnake pranks.

THE RED GLOVE

The red glove yearned with all her being to perform a dastardly deed. In fact, the word ‘dastardly’ danced about in her mind through all her waking hours. She wasn’t all that perfectly clear on what it meant, but she knew a certain amount of nastiness was involved.  For instance, when dining one evening with a handsome spat, she silently chastised the chap with How dastardly of you to take the biggest chop. On another occasion when she stumbled while crossing a trestle, she thought How dastardly to trip while crossing this trestle. In time she began to practice an evil chuckle to be used when performing her dastardly deed, whatever it might turn out to be. ‘Heh, heh, heh,’ she chuckled, making her voice dip to depths previously unexplored. ‘Heh, heh, heh. Heh, heh, HEH!’ Fortunate it was for her that she couldn’t blush redder on the day she inadvertently practiced her chuckle and was overheard and mocked by a passing lorgnette. Truth will out, and in the end she realized that she was far too timid to perform a dastardly deed of any sort at all. And yet she continued in private to narrow her eyes, chuckle, and think How now, my fine friend. Plead mercy as you may. Lo, I am compelled to carry out my dastardly plan.

A SENTENCE BY PHILIP K. DICK

July 7, 2012

“Yes, sir,” a nattily dressed new animal salesman said to him chattily as he stood gaping with a sort of glazed, meek need at the displays.

Phil selects nattily and chattily for use in this sentence from his future noir tale, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

DOUGLAS DUMBRILLE KWIZ ANSWER

July 6, 2012

Doug made a mean pie, but as an accomplished pastry chef, he got a bigger kick out of making buttery flaky croissants. He only gave away one of his avocado ranches to a random child. He spent a limited amount of his time handing out free pens to the homeless. He was far from bland when he took to the pulpit. So yes, the correct answer is that he nurtured puppies.
