when it’s twilight in the zone

and you find yourself alone

by a field of corn as silent as can be

please do not despair

simply be aware

that you have been transformed into a tree

THE SONG

September 2, 2014

There is a sparrow on my brain

Or is it that I’ve gone insane

Time will tell if time will tell

If there’s a sparrow on my brain

(sung to the tune of Castle on a Cloud from Les Mis)

‘The old gringo came to Mexico to die.’

An early sentence in The Old Gringo by Carlos Fuentes. The question? What happened to Ambrose Bierce when he disappeared into Mexico to join Pancho Villa’s rebels? Nobody knows, but Carlos conjures up a possible scenario.

THE TREASURE HUNTER’S REWARD

August 25, 2014

robot helm

The taste of triumph has eluded you for such a long slog of time. Now finally you stand at the entrance to the long hall. You have conquered the highest mountain, the steepest cliff. You can see the promised green door far off in the distance. Behind it? Wealth beyond imagination. Giddy, you stagger down the hall, footfalls tapping out a warning you ignore. You press both hands against the door. At first, it yields reluctantly. Then it flies open. There she is. You die.

THE TIDEWATER CLAM

August 24, 2014

clam

The tidewater clam made a final entry in its journal. Scooting from the table, it approached the knife case hanging on the wall, withdrew its favorite cutter, and abandoned its abode for the beach. Grimly it scudged along toward the meadow whipgrass flailing in the wind. Its final destination was the little shanty tucked in the dunes. The tidewater clam made entry at long and at last in the depth of night. The silence was pierced by an anguished cry of ‘Nooooooo!’ The next morning there was no longer a shanty tucked in the dunes. Instead, a pile of ashes and a few charred bones made silent appeal to the gray frowning sky.
