THE BILLIE BURKE KWIZ ANSWER

June 22, 2012

Well done, Sarah and others. You no doubt deduced from the fact that Billie’s father was a famous circus clown that Billie had become an expert stilt walker by the age of 3 and therefore it was no surprise to discover her subsequent 1935 climbing of the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building. As an added note, she came back down the stairs on stilts, too. What a trooper.

THE BILLIE BURKE KWIZ

June 21, 2012

Of course, she was the daughter of a famous circus clown.

Of course, she was Mrs. Flo Ziegfeld.

Of course, she played Mrs. Jordan in the great film, ‘Dinner at 8’.

Naturally, she’ll live forever as Glinda in ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

But can you believe that Billie also:

a. once raced motorcycles with Orville Wright.

b. beat Zelda Fitzgerald in an archery contest.

c. climbed the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building on stilts.

d. could tear the New York City phone directory in half with her bare hands.

Loon: So what can you tell me about the upcoming takeover?

Triffid Strategist: Nothing.

Loon: Ah, come on. How about a few hints at least?

Triffid Strategist: No.

Loon: I’ll give you a present if you just tell me one single little thing about it.

Triffid Strategist: No.

Loon: Pleeease.

Triffid Strategist: No.

Loon: Pretty please with sugar on it.

Triffid Strategist: Go to your room.

Loon (stalking off, fuming, muttering): I never get to hear anything about world takeovers by sentient plants.

1. Work only at night.

2. After locating and approaching with 15 meters of prey, discard your accordion.

3. Become a gelatinous mass.

4. Ooze with all the stealth you can muster until you have your prey surrounded.

5. Envelop.

BLOOMSDAY TOAST – 2012

June 16, 2012

BLOOMSDAY TOAST

Here’s to –

Nora the barnacle goose –

Skin-the-Goat –

the giggle fit of bronze by gold –

the blind stripling piano tuner tap tap tapping along –

Stephen deep in thought strolling on Sandymount Strand –

socks with skyblue clocks, jaunty –

Plumtree’s Potted Meats, which can make of each home an abode of bliss –

Rose of Castille and rows of cast steel –

met him pike hoses –

Come forth, Lazarus!  And he came fifth and lost the job –

On his wise shoulders through the checkerwork of leaves the sun flung spangles, dancing coins –

Private Carr and his escalating oath –

lame Gerty limping, a dreamer –

those lovely seaside girls –

the heaventree of stars hung with humid nightblue fruit –

Could a swim duck? Says I –

yes
